Being An Ally: Using Power, Privilege, and Majority Status to Support Others

August 14 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

$45

This presentation explores the imbalance of power and opportunity found amongst different groups in society and how we can push for inclusion and equity by using our own privilege, power, and status to help on micro and macro levels.  The presentation will include an interactive simulation that mirrors the experiences of different socio-economic classes (e.g. lower class, middle class, and upper class) in the United States. The activity is conducted as a game, with the end goal of becoming as wealthy as you can. Participants will reflect on their experience at the end of the simulation.

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will have a better understanding of the interconnectedness of concepts like privilege, power, status, bias, marginalization, oppression, etc.
  • Participants will explore how different identities and demographic characteristics can lead to different experiences within society
  • Participants will learn different macro and micro-behaviors of effective allies, as well as non-helpful behaviors to avoid
  • Participants will develop greater empathy for people belonging to different socio-economic groups than their own, particularly those who are in poverty
