Preservation Parks of Delaware County
Preservation Parks of Delaware County’s mission is to protect and conserve the natural and historic features of Delaware County and to inspire outdoor exploration and learning. If spending time outdoors and promoting wildlife is your calling, Preservation Parks offers a number of volunteer opportunities.
The Annual Trick or Treat Trail needs lots of volunteers to assist. Help with setting up on Saturday, October 20 from 9:30-11:30 am and/or during the event on Sunday, October 21 from noon – 4:30 pm. The event takes place at Gallant Woods Park on Buttermilk Hill Road this year.

- .30 volunteers needed to decorate the half mile forested trail with kid-friendly Halloween décor.
Trick-or-Treat event on Sunday, October 21 at Gallant Woods Park
- . 30 Volunteers needed from noon – 4:30 pm. Volunteers should wear a kid friendly Halloween costume. Volunteers will hand out candy along enchanted forested treat trail, assist with hay ride, facilitate the scare crow judging contest, help with pumpkin decorating and more. A food truck will be on site selling hotdogs. Fun for Everyone! Last year or more than 1200 hundred people attended this event!
Gallant Farm just Northwest of Delaware is a representation of a Depression-era farm, and includes a farmhouse with period furnishings, a barn with historic 1890’s timbers, a granary, machine shed and barnyard, demonstration crop fields, vegetable garden, orchard, and pond. Visitors encounter costumed interpreters completing their daily chores — plowing the fields, tending the garden, or cooking on a wood-burning stove. Gallant Farm Volunteer opportunities include Farm House Docent, Farm Interpreter, Farm Hand and Livestock Hand.
Land Stewards spend time outdoors and promoting wildlife. As a Land Steward you may pull invasive plants, monitor a bird box trail, be a grounds & trail keeper, maintain a native plant garden as a Native Garden Keeper, participate in a number of citizen science opportunities, and attend Bio Blitz events. BioBlitz events are intended to serve a quick surveys of many species in an area, usually done by several individuals over a 24-hour period.
Visitor Center Attendants are needed at Deer Haven and Shale Hollow Parks. This volunteer greets visitors, responds to questions and provides accurate information, makes guests feel comfortable with the facility, answers phone inquiries, performs some light cleaning and assists with other duties as needed. Volunteers must enjoy interacting with people and have an outgoing personality. Guest Services Volunteers are also responsible for opening and securely closing the nature center buildings.
Education volunteers assist park staff during public nature programs, create displays, and help with special projects. Education volunteers may assist our Naturalist staff and/or serve at Gallant Farm sharing about rural life in the 1930s and 40s.
Special Events at Preservation Parks can draw hundreds of participants, and require a team of enthusiastic volunteers before, during and after the event. Special events include the popular Trick or Treat Trail, Winter Evening on the Farm, Perseid Meteor Shower Campout and more.
Parks Marketing Ambassadors spread the message about Preservation Parks and programs offered by representing them at community events. Host park information booths, walk in community parades, dress in an adorable park mascot costume, share photos you take in the parks with the staff, and assist in the district office.
