When Bullying Shows Up Later in Life: Understanding and Addressing Bullying Behaviors in Older Adults

Purpose:
Bullying behavior is common among children and adolescents. However, bullying often re-emerges later in life among older adults. This type of of behavior is seen in settings such as long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, healthcare settings, community programs and among families. Bullying may include a variety of behaviors and manifest in nuanced ways. This workshop will explore bullying and teach participants how to identify bullying behaviors in older adults. Additionally, clinical professionals will be able to identify risk factors and influences on bullying behaviors. Finally, clinicians will learn to apply appropriate strategies to address bullying behaviors and develop plans to assist clients who may be bullied.
Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define and identify bullying behaviors in older adults.
  2. Identify risk factors of and contributing influences on bullying behaviors among older adults.
  3. Apply appropriate interventions strategies to address bullying behaviors.
  4. Develop practical plans for supporting clients who may be bullied.

About the Presenter(s):

DeAnna (Henderson) Wilson, Ph.D

DeAnna (Henderson) Wilson, Ph.D., is an Ohio Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).

Previously, Dr. Wilson served as the Chief Operations Officer of The Neighborhood House, Inc., Director of the Residential Treatment Center at Ohio Hospital for Psychiatry, as an Associate, tenured Professor at Alabama State University and most recently she served as Dean for the College of Graduate, Adult, and Continuing Education at Wilberforce University.

Currently, Dr. Wilson serves as an Associate Dean 1 at Walden University and as Founder/CEOof Rejuvenation Training & Consulting, LLC. Dr. Wilson’s research interests include multicultural issues related to counseling and theacademy, mentoring, mentorship of women, self-care and wellness, and ethical leadership.

Dr. Wilson is the 2020 Past President for the National Rehabilitation Association (NRA) and served on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns. Dr. Wilson has co-authored four book chapters, and has co-written several articles in the area of rehabilitation and mental health counseling.
