Overcoming Compassion Fatigue
with Self-Care for the Helping Professional

Focusing on compassion fatigue, burnout, and self-care, this presentation focuses on personal and professional wellness. It discusses both compassion fatigue and burnout and helps attendees assess their own levels for each. We will also discuss the impacts that compassion fatigue and burnout can have on a person’s short and long-term health and career longevity as well as the ways it can be harmful on an organization-wide level. Further, we will discuss examples of things organizations can do to promote self-care among their employees.
By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will:
**Participants will have a better understanding of how self-care provides benefits to personal wellness, career longevity, and agency health.
**Participants will understand the difference between burnout and compassion fatigue.
**Participants will know how to assess themselves for burnout and compassion fatigue.
**Participants will have been given examples of how self-care can work on an agency or organization-wide level and have a stronger sense of what they would like their employers to do to promote employee self-care.
About the presenter:
Dr. Jamie Fairfield is a Violence Prevention Educator for HelpLine. Before becoming a prevention educator, he taught at the University of Louisville, The Ohio State University, and the University of Kentucky, from which he earned his Ph.D. in English in 2015.
