POSTPONED Developing a Trauma Informed Approach for Compassionate Care and Effective Organizations

Trauma Informed Approach
Purpose:
A trauma-informed approach acknowledges the need to understand life experiences in order to deliver effective client care. This approach has the potential to improve engagement, intervention adherence, client outcomes, staff well-being, and organizational operations. Often when discussing a Trauma Informed Approach, the dialogue is limited to the experience of the client. However, as this session will reveal, this narrow perspective is inadequate. A trauma informed approach can and should be an ongoing process which is incorporated at all levels of an organization including care of clients, care of providers/staff, as well as being strategically incorporated into the operations of the organization. This session will review the healthcare origins of trauma informed work, discuss numerous facets of a trauma informed approach across the continuum of client care, staff engagement, and organizational operations. Finally, this session, will assist participants in developing their own next steps of incorporating a trauma informed approach into their work, whether the participant is a direct care provider, administrator, or executive in the human services sector.
Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Explore the healthcare research origins of trauma which support a trauma informed approach to human services provision and organizational operations.
  • Articulate current best practices found in trauma informed work for their own practice or area of authority within their organization.
  • Create next steps, through a reflective exercise, to move forward a more comprehensive trauma informed approach, following this presentation.
