Wow that Works! Using the Gems™ Approach to Guide Daily Activities

Puzzle with keyhole - This is a 3d render illustration
Purpose:
Well-known Occupational Therapist and Educator, Teepa Snow has proposed a set of functional guidelines to inform the care of individuals who are living with any progressive form of dementia. Instead of using numbers or letters as a guide, she has chosen to use gemstones to reflect the precious and complex identity of each individual. The Gems™ Approach also focuses on what characteristics and skills are still available to individuals with dementia, rather than just the loss of function. This session will use the Gems™ Approach to assist caregivers and others with identifying and providing the right type of care environment, at the right time to individuals living with dementia.
Learning Objectives:

By attending the workshop, participants will:

  • Identify the characteristics of individuals living with dementia using the Gems™ Approach, particularly as they apply to daily activities at home and other care settings.
  • Use specific daily scenarios to apply the 6 gemstone characteristics to different individuals and situations. They include: sapphire, diamond, emerald, amber, ruby, and pearl.
  • Describe effective intervention techniques, communication with, and guidance to individuals which fit the different gemstone levels in order to improve their quality of daily life.
